Getting Started with BlindCrypt
Now that you have successfully installed BlindCrypt, it's time to start encrypting your files. Please follow the instructions below to encrypt your first file.
-
Select BlindCrypt from your application window and enter the username and password that you selected when creating your account. You can minimize the window once you are logged in. (Note: By logging into BlindCrypt, you are creating a secure connection that allows you to protect the files you are about to encrypt with our patented technology.)
-
Next, you will want to launch the Veracrypt application. Select the Veracrypt icon from your desktop or application window. (Note: The Veracrypt application allows you to select and choose files to encrypt.)
-
The next step is to create your volume. A volume is similar to a folder on your computer where you store files of similar interest. Your volume will be where you store your encrypted files. Select create volume to get started.
-
On the next screen select the top option, create an encrypted file container (your volume), and then click next.
-
Select standard VeraCrypt volume unless you want to create a hidden volume which you can learn more about here.
-
On the next screen, you will be selecting the name and location on your computer where you would like your encrypted folder (volume) to live. Click on select file, choose the location on your computer where you would like your volume to reside and then name your file. Click Next.
-
On the encryption options screen, we recommend using AES for your encryption algorithm. Your hash algorithm should always be set to BlindHash. Once you have selected these options, click next.
-
The next step is to select the size of your volume. This will determine the amount of storage you will have within the container. In the example below we have selected our volume to be 2MB. Once you have chosen the size of your volume click next.
-
Next you will create a password that protects that specific volume and allows access to the files that you will encrypt in that volume. (Note: Do not forget this password; it can not be retrieved.) Once you have created your password, click next. (Note: you will receive a short password message if you select a password less than 20 characters. Because, you are using BlindHash for your hash algorithm, you may select a password that is shorter than 20 characters.)
-
The next step is to format your volume. Move your mouse until the red line at the bottom of the window turns yellow or green and then click format.
-
You have now successfully created your volume (encrypted file container where your encrypted files will reside). Click ok and then exit. Now that you have a location (your volume) to store encrypted files, you can start the encryption process. On the veracrypt application screen, click select file and locate the volume you just created, click open.
-
Once the file is open you will want to mount your encrypted folder. By mounting your encrypted folder (volume), you are making the volume active so that you can save and access files within the encrypted volume. Select a veracrypt drive to mount your volume on from the list (*Note: It does not matter which drive you choose, for our example we are using M) and then click mount.
-
You will then be prompted to enter the password for the volume you created. Enter your password, and from the dropdown menu select HMAC-SHA-512-BLINDHASH. By selecting this, your volume will mount faster. Once you have entered your password and selected BlindHash, click ok. (Note: You will be asked to enter the password every time you mount a volume. Once the volume is mounted you will not be asked for the password anymore.)
-
The BlindCrypt submit request window will appear. Click submit request and now you will notice in the VeraCrypt application window that the button that previously stated mount has changed to dismount. This indicates that your volume is mounted and you can now access your volume and begin saving files to it.
-
To save files to your volume, you will treat it like any other drive on your system. Simply open or create a file you want to save to your encrypted volume, click save and select the veracrypt drive as the option to save your file to (M is what we selected in step 12). Your file is now saved in the encrypted container. (Note: If you are saving a file that already exists, you will need to delete your original file once you have saved it to your encrypted volume. Otherwise the original unencrypted file will still exist on your device.
-
Once you are done saving files to your encrypted volume, you will want to dismount your drive to prevent unauthorized access.
